Lecture 1 • Introduction to Astrology
In short, Astrology is the study of the relationship between celestial bodies, such as planets and stars, and events on Earth. Astrology explores how these celestial bodies influence and interact with human life.
The Zodiac
The Zodiac is an imaginary belt in the sky that extends approximately 8 degrees on either side of the ecliptic, the apparent path that the Sun, Moon, and planets follow through the sky over the course of a year. It is divided into twelve equal segments, each associated with one of the twelve Zodiac signs. These signs are traditionally used in astrology and are an essential part of understanding and interpreting an individual's birth chart or horoscope.

The term "Zodiac" is derived from the Greek word "zōidiakòs kýklos," which means "circle of animals." Each of the twelve Zodiac signs is represented by a specific symbol, often an animal or a mythical figure, and has its unique set of personality traits, characteristics, and qualities associated with it.

The twelve Zodiac signs, in order, are:

1. Aries (The Ram)
2. Taurus (The Bull)
3. Gemini (The Twins)
4. Cancer (The Crab)
5. Leo (The Lion)
6. Virgo (The Virgin)
7. Libra (The Scales)
8. Scorpio (The Scorpion)
9. Sagittarius (The Archer)
10. Capricorn (The Goat)
11. Aquarius (The Water Bearer)
12. Pisces (The Fishes)

Astrologers believe that the positions of celestial bodies, such as the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars within these Zodiac signs at the time of an individual's birth, can influence their personality, behaviors, and life events. As the Earth orbits the Sun, the Sun appears to move through each of the Zodiac signs over the course of a year, which is why people have a Zodiac sign based on their birth date.
The Zodiac is a fundamental concept in astrology and serves as the basis for creating birth charts, which provide insights into an individual's character, strengths, weaknesses, and life path. Astrologers use the positions of celestial bodies within the Zodiac signs to make predictions and offer guidance in various aspects of life, including relationships, career, and personal development.
Key Characteristics of Each Sign
These Zodiac signs provide a basic framework for understanding personality traits and characteristics. However, it's important to remember that individuals are unique, and their complete astrological profile involves the positions of planets in their birth chart, which adds depth and complexity to their astrological portrait.
Branches of Astrology
Astrology dates back thousands of years, and in that time, a great many variations and permutations have arisen. Here are the three most well-known:
• Natal Astrology
Natal astrology, also known as birth or natal chart astrology, is the most common form of astrology. It focuses on interpreting an individual's birth chart to gain insights into their personality, potential, and life path. A birth chart is a snapshot of the cosmos at the moment of a person's birth and includes the positions of celestial bodies like planets, the Sun, Moon, and more, in the zodiac signs and astrological houses.

Example: Suppose someone is born on July 15, 1990, at 2:30 PM in New York City. A natal astrologer would create their birth chart and analyze it to understand the person's strengths, weaknesses, life purpose, and potential life events.

Comprehensive Discussion: Natal astrology offers a deep exploration of an individual's character, life events, and potential life paths based on the positions of celestial bodies at the time of their birth. Astrologers interpret these placements within the 12 zodiac signs and 12 astrological houses, considering aspects (angles) formed between planets, to provide a holistic view of a person's life. Natal astrology is often used for self-discovery, relationship compatibility, and personal growth.
• Horary Astrology
Horary astrology is a branch that answers specific questions by casting a horoscope at the moment the question is asked. Astrologers interpret the chart to provide insights and answers to the querent's specific inquiry.

Example: If someone asks an astrologer whether they should accept a job offer, the astrologer casts a horary chart for the moment the question is asked. Based on the chart's planetary positions, aspects, and the astrologer's knowledge, they provide an answer and insights into the job offer.

Horary astrology is focused on obtaining answers to pressing questions. It is based on the principle of the universe being interconnected, and at the moment of asking a question, the universe reflects its answer in the positions of celestial bodies. Horary astrology is highly precise and requires a deep understanding of astrology and the ability to frame a question accurately.
• Electional Astrology
Electional astrology, also known as event astrology, involves selecting auspicious times to begin new ventures, such as marriages, business launches, or medical procedures. Astrologers use this branch to choose favorable moments based on celestial configurations.

Example: A couple planning to get married consults an electional astrologer to determine the best date and time for their wedding. The astrologer identifies an astrologically harmonious date and time for the ceremony, enhancing the couple's chances for a happy and prosperous marriage.

Electional astrology capitalizes on the idea that the timing of an event significantly influences its outcome. Astrologers study celestial positions to identify periods when the cosmic energies align with the intentions of the event. Electional astrology helps individuals make informed decisions to optimize the results of their endeavors.
